Western Care have announced former politician Mary O’Rourke as the guest speaker for their upcoming Candlelight Ball which takes place on Saturday, February 9. Former celebrity guest speakers at the ball include An Taoiseach Enda Kenny, sports commentator Micheál O’Muircheartaigh and Mary Davis of the Special Olympics. The Candlelight Ball is a solid fixture in the Castlebar social calendar.

John McNicholl has announced that he will play a benefit dance for Western Care Association in the Park Hotel, Kiltimagh, on Friday, November 16. This will be John’s only appearance in Mayo in the coming month and is sure to attract a huge following. This event is being organised by Derek Higgins, a 28-year-old from Shanaghmoyle, Knock, who will run the New York City Marathon for Western Care Association this Sunday, November 4. He is the first Mayo person to run the marathon in the Big Apple for the association and intends to raise significant funds for Western Care.

An Taoiseach, Enda Kenny launched the first go-kart pedalathon in the west of Ireland last Saturday, August 4. On Saturday September 29 a relay of Mayo celebrities, sports persons, politicians, and others will take part in the first pedal go-kart pedalathon to be held in the west of Ireland. The event involves a sponsored go-kart pedal between Swinford and Castlebar in aid of Western Care Association.

The 2012 summer development draw took place on Sunday July 15 at the Great Western Family Fun Day in Breaffy House Resort, Castlebar. The winners are as follows: first prize—a family holiday to Paris, Caroline Gormley. Second prize: a weekend for two to Chelsea FC—EiliSh Durcan. Third prize a helicopter sight-seeing flight for two people - Angela O’Connor and fourth prize—a signed Ireland jersey—Sean Garvey. The prize for selling the winning ticket went to Margaret Chambers.
